Sauna LED Lighting: Why Quality Makes All the Difference
A sauna with atmospheric LED lighting sounds simple. Yet there are enormous differences in quality on the market. Many companies sell LED strips as 'sauna-suitable', but not every strip truly is. Choosing the wrong strip risks premature failure, colour shifts — and in some cases even dangerous situations.
At Xpro Pool Lighting we deliberately choose strips that can withstand the heat of the sauna. In this article we explain what to look for and which strips we offer.
The Biggest Problem: Too High a Wattage
The temperature in a sauna regularly rises to 90 to 110°C. Ordinary LED strips are not designed for this. But there is another common mistake: using strips with far too high a power rating.
On the market we see strips of 12 W up to 18 W per metre being sold as sauna lighting. That is far too high. An LED strip also generates heat itself. In an environment that is already at temperature, that heat has nowhere to go. The result: the strip overheats from the inside out and has a drastically shorter lifespan.
The rule of thumb is simple: the lower the wattage, the longer the lifespan in the sauna.

IP67 or IP68: What Is the Difference?
IP67 provides protection against submersion for up to 30 minutes at 1 metre depth. For most saunas this is more than sufficient.
IP68 goes further and is suitable for continuous contact with water, even at higher pressure. This is the choice for steam cabins, hot tubs or applications where the strip comes into direct contact with water flows.
